We read in the newspapers a lot about many modern illnesses and diseases that it must make sense to start protecting ourselves with some health insurance.  I suppose that these challenges have always been around but nowadays cancer, AIDS and other similar nasty problems seem to be much more prevalent.

You can actually get health insurance on many different levels and, of course, as with most things in life, the more you pay the more you get.  The cheaper options are not usually worth considering and you should budget a high sum to get good protection.

Just to clarify some of the language in this market.  The premium is your regular monthly payment that you pay to the issuing company for your health insurance.  Deductible is the amount that you have to provide yourself prior to getting any income from your insurance company.

As an example, if your monthly premium contribution were $400 and your deductible $300, you would pay the company $400 every month to cover your family and when you needed to make a claim for some operation or treatment, you would have to pay the first $300 of that claim.

It is possible to contribute a small monthly sum and have a very large deductible.  This would mean that it would only pay out in the instance of a real catastrophe.  On the other hand, if you wanted a small deductible the premium would be considerably higher.

Other factors which will help to determine both the premium and the deductible are the current ages of all the family as well as their health at the time you take out the arrangement.

If you are lucky your employer may offer you the option to make contributions into a health insurance scheme or they could even be free.  It will be deducted directly from your salary check so it will not seem as tough as actually making the payments.  If you have the chance this will be the most cost effective method.

Of course you do not have to do anything at all.  Only you can decide what level of risk you are prepared to take in case you or your family have any future medical challenges.  All I can say is that I would not risk anything for my family so I have a reliable health insurance plan in place.
