Help Choosing Clearance Bargains
What is your first reaction when you get something in your home mail box or in your local newspaper advertising a clearance sale at your local clothes shop?
There are two schools of thought that most people fall into. Some will think that the goods must be a bit sub-standard and the store are trying to sell them off cheaply. At the opposite end other just cannot resist a bargain and get there as quickly as possible. The truth is that it is probably somewhere in the middle. Sometimes the clothing really is a bargain but you have to accept that they may be selling seconds.
Here are some tips to help you recognize the bargains.
For clothes it is often very easy. If you are the end of the summer, they will want to get rid of all their cool clothes to allow room to stock up on the warm winter ones. You will definitely get some good deals on bathing costumes if you are prepared to hold on to them for six months or if you are planning a winter sun vacation.
It is just not worthwhile for the stores to hang on to these goods for the whole of the winter, they often use up a lot of storage space. When you have some spare money you can often get really good quality clothing at about half of the retail price in these circumstances.
Another opportunity at the end of the summer is when the kids go back to school. As soon as they are all back the price of school clothing will drop dramatically.
Do not be tempted to spend money that you do not have however. If you load them up onto your credit card, you will end up paying interest and it will possibly cost you more in the long run. Only spend money within your budget at all times and only after the necessities have been taken care of.
Other similar opportunities occur when a manufacturer brings out a new range of something, possible kitchen utensils or bedding. If you are not the type of person who has to have the absolute latest goods, the old style will work just as effectively.
Color choices are changing frequently also. We must recognize however that the retailers are controlling this to push up spending. Don’t you think that you could sleep just as soundly in white sheets even though this years color might be cream? Use these things to your advantage.
The same promotion principle is often applied to cosmetic items. Just because there is a new perfume out you can buy the old one that is now in the clearance sale if you were happy with the smell for the past year. The items are all first class, just a bit out of date.
When it comes down to it, they even sometimes trick us by using the same product and put it in a different box in order to make it look different and increase the price.
Annual holiday periods are an excellent opportunity. A friend of mine buys all her Christmas cards at the beginning of January. They usually cost half of what she would have to pay in December. If you like Easter eggs, they are a lot cheaper after Easter than before. They taste just as nice too.
Having said all this, the bargain value of an item can only be decided by you. Just remember the warnings that it is never a bargain unless you really need it and do not spend more money than you can afford.

Really helpful advice. I admit I avoid sales of all kinds – weird huh? Well, the first job I ever had was in a retail clothing store. I will never (ever!) forget the sales they had – all of the crummy prep work aside, people lined up outside the doors waiting for the store to open and then literally ran in – getting pushed and shoved, cleaning out dressing rooms, having to deal with goofy and often rude people (who we not-so-affectionaly nicknamed "rag pickers") – cured me for life of any desire to be a part of something like that again. As a bonus, I'm sure I've saved a LOT of money over the years

They are even doing that with magazines. My husband buys several business magazines. Now they are changing the covers and sometimes he buys the same magazine twice.
The first place I go, in a store, is the clearance rack. Especially for clothing. I have purchase so many $10 skirts at designer stores because they were on clearance.

Hi Trevor,
I stay away from the shops when the sales are on! It does something strange to people – they act all crazy and the shop becomes a mess with a frenzy of people that must find a bargain… whilst highly amusing I like my shopping experience to be orderly and calm, preferably broken up with a break for coffee and cake!
There are however some great deals to be had… but OH GOSH you are right… the golden rule of not spending outside of the budget and certainly leaving the credit card alone is a must! Gosh the interest they charge is outrageous!

Oh Boy… This is right up my alley! When I go to a major department store, I go directly to the 85% off rack. I have a fashion industry background so I know the deal. I think it is really geared for teens, but when we are adults, we don't need the latest fads. We can rock ANYTHING! I like certain brands of clothing and get them off season for 85% off. I've been doing this for years and have high quality clothing for less.
Also, it is trendy these days for people to go to thrift stores. I scored T shirts for $1 each and the were the "latest" last years styles. I also like labels from different countries. I have found awesome clothing from Italy, Africa, etc for under $20.
A for anything else, I am a mid century buff. I love garage sales and finding treasures and turning them over for a good profit.
Ok..I don't want to write a novel on this but it was so exciting to read this post.
Thanks

Hi Trevor,
I too used to work in a retail setting in one of my earliest jobs and remember well the 'retail therapy' people are willing to undergo time and time again.
I personally believe in only going for purchases that directly fall into the category of 'essential', or they can help contribute to my wealth, and this may not be for everyone else. Training the mind to move away from irrational buying to a disciplined one is critical too.

I'm so guilty of the second "school of thought"!lol Though there is no guarantee that I'll be having some purchases. I always see to it that I'm buying at a reasonable price. Those are amazing tips, Trevor. Shopping can be addictive so I really need those advices from time to time. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing these tips, Trevor. I am one of those who go shopping at the end of the season and enjoys reasonable prices. Of course I may have to go to 2-3 three different stores cause many items are sold out, but it's worth the hassle. Marquita's story was funny. LOL

This is really helpful advice. If manufacturers are trying to trick us to boost their sales consumers have to be smart in buying things.
