5 Tips On Teaching Kids The Importance Of Money
These days teenager rarely seem to know the ins and outs of using the money that they earn wisely. They were not taught anything about it in school or by their parents.
Because it is not in the school curriculum, it is important that parents do teach this to their kids.
Firstly they need to know how to save some money regularly. Understanding the concepts of managing money will help them with their investments in later life. It will be very beneficial for them sometime.
Let us take a look at a few ways we can all help our children in this area.
1. Kids need to know exactly what money means and is. As soon as they are able to count start relating those numbers to dollars and cents. As they play their pretend shop games keep reminding them that real money is exchanged for goods.
2. As soon as possible they need to learn the advantage of saving some money wisely. Ensure that they understand that it will benefit them enormously as they grow older and that it is very important. Encourage them to ask you questions about money and the cost of goods to help them learn.
3. Do not just give them their weekly allowance, help them use it. Give them coins and notes and explain exactly what they mean. Then show them that if they save some each week rather than just spending it on sweets, they will be able to buy the latest toys and games that they want. Teach them to get more pleasure from the things they have saved for and bought themselves than from the presents you have given them.
4. When they are old enough they should start to earn their own pocket money. They do not have to go out of home to do this. Instead of just giving them their allowance, pay them for doing small jobs like washing up, tidying their bedrooms or maybe cleaning the family car. This should help them to learn that money does not grow on trees but has to be worked for. It will help them spend it more sensibly.
5. Piggy banks are a good idea. Encourage them to just put a little of their allowance into a piggy bank regularly and then, when it is full, you can show them that a little saved regularly turns into a big amount. Understanding this will encourage them to put a little more away each time.
Of course you cannot simply sit the kids down and teach them this one day in the school holidays. It has to be a slow ongoing process and relating everything that you do as a family to money.
Children do not believe all that their parents say straight away but by mentioning it regularly and their own experiences they will gradually learn the importance of saving money.
